Ultrasound results

So I had the ultrasound today. It is confirmed that I tore my hip flexor. The good news is that it is a partial tear, and should scar over and heal. The bad news is, no running for another 4-6 weeks. Yuck. The ultrasound was cool, especially for an anatomy dork like myself. The neat part about doing the ultrasound as opposed to an MRI is that you can contract the muscle and see what happens. Since I couldn't get the pictures I drew a wonderful interpretation of the ultrasound on Paint.

Some may laugh at my artwork, but this is pretty much how it looked. The right muscle fibers were all lined up in neat rows and contracted in an orderly fashion. The left was a mishmosh of disorganized torn fibers with some contracting and others going askew. Diagnosis confirmed.

From the other side of the exam table...

As many of you know, I have been training for the Buffalo half-marathon since the winter. I should say, I was training for it. About 7 weeks ago when the training was really picking up, I had a great run on the treadmill and got off and immediately started to do some squats. In retrospect, I should have given myself a little rest. I felt a pop in my hip and a sharp pain.
After that incident, I rested up for about..eh 5 days. I picked up the training again, going up to an 8 mile run a couple weeks ago. Now, the hip had been bothering me all along but I was being a lil stubborn about it. The last long run did me in. I'm talking full-on limp, unable to go up the stairs, losing sleep and husband scolding me type of pain. I rested another 2 weeks and finally gave in and made an appointment with a sports medicine specialist that I work very closely with.
The probable diagnosis is a proximal rectus femoris tear at the AIIS, ruling out a labral tear of the hip. Now for all my non medical/physical therapist friends, that means I either tore my hip flexor or tore cartilage in my hip. I'm having an ultrasound done in a week to confirm the diagnosis. Of course, running the marathon is now out of the question...just at peak training time. I'm not enjoying being the patient this time. I'm the one scolding and testing and poking and prodding the people most of the time. It's a strange experience.
Well, enough of my whining. I'll post the results of the test when I get them.

Just to add insult to injury (literally) this came in the mail yesterday.

Spring is here?

YAY, AN UPDATE!
I know, I know, it is long overdue. Things have been busy with the Buffalo Hall's. After returning from our vacation in Florida we have had spring fever. With Buffalo weather though, spinrg really has come to stay. But, as with most, we are trying to do our best and act like it is spring.
Unable to not to go home for Easter, we had our own Easter feast here:
A couple of weekends ago we did travel home for some spring birthday's: Papa Edwards, Natalie and Gracie. As you can see, Gracie enjoyed her cake on her 2nd birthday:

And, we had time to meet up with the boys for a few drinks and laughs:

I really don't know what is so funny for Kittner to be laughing so hard, but it may have been the horrible karaoke:This past weekend, we were actually in town and not working so we decided to start some early yard work. If you recall, in a previous post back in the fall we dug out a sidewalk, now it was time to fill in the hole a little better. Hopefully in 7-10 days, we will see the start of new grass....as long as the little girl that rides here bike up and down the sidewalk for 10 straight hours a day keeps off the lawn. While most of us enjoying being outside in the sun, others would rather soak in the rays another way:
We will keep more up-to-date with our blog postings since there will be more going on in the coming months. We have Yankees games, weddings, landscaping to do in the yard, new babies on the way (not ours), half marathons and other fun summer stuff all to look forward to.

Friendly reminder: Today is April 15th, 2008.....are your taxes filed with Uncle Sam?
